Required Auto Insurance in South Dakota

South Dakota requires all drivers to have liability insurance for both property damage and bodily injury, which pays for any damage or injuries caused by an accident in which you were at fault. South Dakota requires the following minimum liability coverage:

  • Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.
  • Property Damage: $25,000 per accident.
  • Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury: $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident.

South Dakota Teen Driving Laws

South Dakota operates under a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) program, which includes three stages: Instruction Permit, Restricted Permit, and Full Operator's License. 

  • Instruction Permit: At 14, South Dakota teens may obtain an Instruction Permit after passing a written exam. An Instruction Permit allows teens to drive with a parent or legal guardian. Teens must complete 50 hours of supervised driving practice (10 hours at night and 10 in inclement weather) before moving to the next stage.
  • Restricted Permit: After holding their permit for 180 days with driver's ed, or 275 days without driver's ed, teens may apply for their Restricted Permit. With a Restricted Permit, teens cannot drive unsupervised between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM.
  • Full Operator's License: At 16, or after holding a Restricted Permit for at least 6 months, teens may apply for their Full Operator's License if the driver has no traffic violations on their driving record.
